October 2008 Grants Awards

In this round of grants, $5,693 was awarded.

Rebecca Watson at Worthington Kilbourne High School was awarded $482 to purchase Spanish Language novels that are written for teenagers who are native speakers of Spanish. These books will be used by students engaging in literary circles in class. They are in addition to the Board approved curriculum.

Mark Glasbrenner at the Worthington Education Center was awarded $613 to purchase a portable document camera that will be used in professional development workshops with Reading Recovery teachers.

Stephanie Records at Kilbourne Middle School received $480 to purchase three Sony Cybershot cameras and three Sandisk 2GB memory cards that will be used by language arts students to relate stories through photo journaling.

Lisa Anfield at Worthington Hills Elementary School was awarded $498 to purchase a variety of graphic novels that will help at-risk readers develop their skills and broaden the range of literature in the library to meet the needs of diverse learners and reluctant readers.

Sandy Berner at Worthington Hills Elementary School was awarded $334 to purchase magnets and materials that will be used as a culminating activity for first grade students. Once the basic concepts of magnetism are taught, students will have an opportunity to invent their own creations.

Randall Ross at McCord Middle School was awarded $597 to purchase one Lego NXT Robotics Kit and software with a site license that will allow installation of software on all the computers in the technology lab. The student Robotics Team will learn to design, build and program robots.

Petra Putnam and Sue Bair at Brookside Elementary School received $576 to support the Junior Achievement Exchange City Experience by enabling participation of all fifth grade students. Students will learn and apply basic economic concepts through an integrated classroom curriculum by experiencing participation in a 10,000 square foot hands-on learning lab site. After six weeks of preparation work, students will actually set up and run their own city for a day. This grant was funded by the Chamber J.A. Exchange City Fund held in the WEF.

Ann Darby and Kristen Watson at Brookside Elementary School were awarded $200 to purchase appropriately-leveled instructional materials to match grade level curriculum. These books that are below the reading level of the classroom text will be used by fifth and sixth grade students to help them access the curriculum.

Connie Ball at Worthington Kilbourne High School was awarded $1,000 to provide funding to help cover the registration fees for students to attend and present at the Future Educators Association National Conference in Denver, Colorado. Their conference presentation will focus on hands-on activities that teachers can use to develop high levels of self-esteem in children from pre-school to high school.

Emily Lazar at Slate Hill Elementary School was awarded $396 from the Nichols/Hopper Fund to purchase tools and equipment that can be used in the Structured Communication Classroom that will provide sensory input to students with sensory integration disorders.

Marcie Hoffman, Michele Spradlin and Kim Deagle at Colonial Hills Elementary School were awarded $517 from the Nichols/Hopper Fund to purchase materials that will be used by teachers to collect data and implement research based interventions in their classrooms. Materials include stop watches, timers, tally counters, intervention manuals and behavior resources.
