March 2009 Special Project Grant Awards

In this round of Special Project Grants, $7,137 was awarded.

Susan Hrenko, Jake Bennett, Cindy Fushimi and Katy Glesenkamp at Worthington Kilbourne High School were awarded $1,500 to purchase equipment that will allow greater student access to the WKHS Greenhouse for curriculum development in classes teaching Science, Family Consumer Sciences and Special Education. Funds will also be used to secure consultation of equipment needs and management of installation from the Franklin Park Conservatory.
The district will repair and upgrade the structure to enable its use by the students.

Mary Spencer, Erin McKinney and Tiffany Lichtenberg at Worthingway Middle School were awarded $2,500 to purchase a class set of SPARK learning systems and sensors that will be used by seventh and eighth grade students in science. Incorporating probes and sensors into the science curriculum enables students to increase their understanding of graphs, terminal velocity and speed. Motion probes will be used in the eighth grade force motion unit and temperature probes will be used in the seventh grade study of weather.

Amy Holtz and Carol Meehan at Slate Hill Elementary School were awarded $1,500
to purchase Partners Literacy Kits that will be used with parents and community volunteers. Funds will also be used to purchase booklets in Spanish to meet the diverse community at Slate Hill. Guided Reading books that foster parent and student interaction will be purchased for the classroom libraries. Increased discussions will enhance language development, fluency and comprehension skills.

Barbara Zook at Evening Street Elementary School was awarded $1,637 to purchase a Mimio interactive board that will be used by the first grade classes to enhance student learning across all content areas. Graphic organizers, student generated mental pictures, pictographs and kinesthetic learning opportunities will increase student metacogniton. Two SENTEO interactive response systems will also be purchased to pre-assess student knowledge and to inform instruction.
