January 2007 Grant Awards

In this round of grants, $3,714 was awarded.

Toni Gardiner at Bluffsview Elementary School was awarded $297 to purchase materials that will be used to establish reading/math learning centers. These portable centers will provide multi-leveled tasks for differentiated individual student learning in the K+ classroom.

Joanne Zwick at Liberty and Bluffsview Elementary Schools was awarded $500 to purchase the services of Chris Johnson, a professional speaker who teaches self-respect and tolerance through the use of magic. He will present to students during the day and to parents and their children in the evening. This is the kick-off for a strong anti-bullying campaign at both Liberty and Bluffsview Elementary Schools that will include additional activities.

Bev Drexel at Worthington Park Elementary School received $500 to support the Junior Achievement Exchange City Experience by enabling participation of all sixth grade students. Students will learn and apply basic economic concepts through an integrated classroom curriculum by experiencing participation in a 10,000 square foot hands-on learning lab site. After six weeks of preparation work, students will actually set up and run their own city for a day.
This grant was funded by the Dublin/Worthington Rotary Club fund held in the WEF.

Andi Prince at Worthington Kilbourne High School was awarded $568 to purchase the services of Guatemalan artist, Hector Castellanos, who will advise and assist Spanish students in creating a street design piece of artwork inspired by the “Guatemalan rug” or “alfombra”. Materials will also be purchased to complete the project.

Jill Carter at Colonial Hills Elementary School was awarded $500 to purchase Mandarin language materials and books about the culture of China. These materials will be utilized in a lunch option program offered to students to learn about Chinese culture. This project is in sync with the ODE new guidelines for age-appropriate language use in Mandarin Chinese and is also in partnership with the Chinese Flagship Program at OSU.

Polly Bates at Granby Elementary School was awarded $494 from the Nichols/Hopper Fund to purchase 15 cassette recorders and canvas backpacks that will enable Reading Improvement Program students, many of whom come from non-English speaking homes, to listen to appropriate age and reading level books on tape in their homes.

Jennifer Ferguson at Colonial Hills Elementary School received $355 from the Nichols/Hopper Fund to purchase rewards for students who participate in the Healthy Schools project, making healthy choices about diet and exercise during a month of activities and educational information.

Debra Murph at Liberty Elementary School was awarded $500 from the Nichols/Hopper Fund to purchase materials that will facilitate and encourage fluent oral reading and better comprehension for struggling readers. Students will self-select appropriately leveled books, practice these books at home and maintain reading logs that will assist them in monitoring their progress toward an appropriate reading rate.
