April 2009 Grant Awards

In this round of grants, $6,369 was awarded.

Anastasia Mayberry at Granby Elementary School was awarded $500 to purchase a variety of library materials that will support the Granby Character Education program that is an essential part of the Basic School renewal model.

Jodie Pierpoint and Lisa Anfield at Worthington Hills Elementary School were awarded $489 to purchase audio books for students in grades K-2 who are currently identified as students with learning difficulties, to assist in modifications to the general curriculum. These media book selections will enable these students to enjoy the same selections that their peers are enjoying by having the opportunity to listen to them.

Kathy Mikkelson and Lisa Anfield at Worthington Hills Elementary School were awarded $475 to purchase audio books for students in grades 3-6 who are currently identified as students with learning difficulties. These resources for the students will meet their individual needs as well as coinciding with the building’s 21st Century proposal of using more technology in the building, promoting personal learning opportunities for students and teachers.

Ellin Granger, Julie Gloeckner and Dale Litt at Thomas Worthington High School were awarded $2,910 to purchase 12 digital recording devices (mp3 players) that will provide Special Education students the technology to access higher reading level books so they can improve comprehension and retention of materials. Teachers will be able to access programs and materials on the internet to provide media to students. Three staff members will receive training at an ITSCO workshop to learn the technology, podcasting, searching, finding and downloading of materials for classroom instruction and support. These skills will be shared with other special education teachers in the school

Ashley Lyons at Worthington Estates Elementary School was awarded $275 to purchase four copies each of 9 Rigby PM Readers that will provide students opportunities for higher level thinking and a variety of comprehension skills. These books will enable the teacher to expand the differentiation of her guided reading group instruction.

Emily Lazar and Kelly Kish in Special Education were awarded $885 from the Nichols/Hopper Fund to purchase pre-vocational activities that can be used throughout the district in the Daily Living Skills Learning Centers from elementary school through high school, providing pre-vocational activities that align with IEP goals and pre-vocational training for students with special needs.

Rob Smith at Liberty Elementary School was awarded $835 from the Nichols/Hopper Fund to purchase the Starfit system which will provide students 16 fitness stations to enhance their overall physical fitness and also to purchase 30 pedometers that will be used in PE classes and available for classroom sign-out for health and wellness projects. This grant in partnership with the Liberty-Sutter PTA and money raised through the Liberty Adventure Running Club will create the Liberty Elementary School 21st Century Wellness Room.
