April 2008 Grant Awards

In this round of grants, $6,022 was awarded.

Jason Cervenec at Thomas Worthington High School was awarded $396 to purchase reagents to extract DNA, amplify DNA, and separate DNA. Data collected will be uploaded to a national database. This project will be used with AP biology students applying the knowledge they gained during the year.

Valerie Haslett, Tabitha Kidwell and Erik Burgeson at Kilbourne Middle School were awarded $500 to purchase children’s books in French and Spanish to enhance literacy in the target language and to enrich the experiences of all foreign language students at KMS.

Deb Krasnodembski, Lynn Murphy and Dan Woerner at Worthington Park Elementary School were awarded $500 to purchase guided reading book sets that will be housed in a central school bookroom which will be available to all staff. These leveled book sets will provide meaningful and purposeful practice to build independent literacy skills for all students.

Kathy Mikkelson and Kristi Patrick at Worthington Hills Elementary School were awarded $500 to purchase copies of current fiction books that target specific reading standards in fifth and sixth grade. These resources will provide an opportunity for learning through modeling, guided practice and improved independent reading.

Jamie Lipp at Colonial Hills Elementary School was awarded $788 to purchase materials for at home literacy kits and training of their use to the families of at risk kindergarten and first grade students.

Julianna Rowsey at Worthington Kilbourne High School received $640 to purchase an LCD projector that will be used by students to present authentic multi-media presentations that will be created by each and every single student enrolled in the various Family and Consumer Science classes at WKHS.

Carol Meehan and Dan Girard at Slate Hill Elementary School were awarded $500 to purchase leveled reading books for classroom instruction. This range of books will be used with primary aged level readers during reading workshop instruction and practice reading time.

Fritz Monroe, Chris Johnson and Krista Bucholz at Brookside Elementary School were awarded $500 to purchase materials to create a second butterfly garden that will allow for more student interaction within the Monarch Butterfly project. This project will further the development of discerning learners in an outdoor enriched environment.

Ashley Lyons at Worthington Estates Elementary School received $488 to purchase materials that will be used to create a word study workstation for kindergarten students, providing students with more chances to practice looking at words in a different way. This station will be an additional literacy workstation in the classroom.

Kelly Kish and Emily Lazar working at seven Elementary Schools were awarded $150 from the Nichols/Hopper Fund to purchase additional word processing fonts to provide consistency and greater independence to special education students across school and home settings.

Brenda Bell at Worthington Park Elementary School was awarded $660 from the Nichols/Hopper Fund to purchase a research based intervention using computer software to improve reading achievement.

Jamie Lipp and Margaret Wilcox at Colonial Hills Elementary School were awarded $400 from the Nichols/Hopper Fund to purchase books on tape and cassette players for at-home use for students with low oral language.
